Check Whether You Have an Intermediate Level of Spanish

B1 is an important step in learning Spanish. At this stage, you can already manage with some autonomy in everyday situations, hold conversations on familiar topics, and express simple opinions.

With a B1 level, you can talk about experiences, plans, trips, studies, work, personal interests, and everyday situations. You can also understand clear texts on familiar topics and participate in conversations when the language is not too complex.

This test is designed for students who already have a solid foundation in Spanish and want to check whether they have mastered the main contents of the B1 level. The result will help you know whether you need to reinforce this level or if you can start preparing for B2.

At PCE Spanish School, we help you understand your starting point so you can choose the right course and continue improving with training adapted to your goals.

What Does This B1 Test Assess?

This B1 Spanish test assesses the content needed to communicate with a certain degree of autonomy in common situations.

The questions are designed to check whether you can understand clear messages, use frequent structures, and express simple ideas with more confidence.

  • Intermediate grammar. The test includes questions about past tenses, contrasts between the present perfect, preterite, and imperfect, verbal periphrases, future forms, basic conditional structures, and introductory subjunctive uses. It also includes frequent connectors for organizing ideas, explaining causes, expressing contrast, and talking about experiences or plans.
  • Common vocabulary. You will find vocabulary related to travel, work, studies, health, leisure, housing, personal relationships, opinions, everyday problems, and experiences. The goal is to check whether you can use frequent words and expressions in real communication situations.
  • Understanding simple texts. Some questions check whether you can understand short and clear texts, such as messages, emails, notices, short news items, or fragments of conversations. At B1 level, you are not expected to understand every nuance, but rather to grasp the main idea and the most important information.
  • Practical use of Spanish. The test also assesses whether you can use Spanish to explain an experience, express an opinion, ask for information, solve an everyday situation, or talk about your plans.

What Does It Mean to Have a B1 Level in Spanish?

Having a B1 level means that you can communicate in Spanish with some autonomy. You no longer depend only on basic phrases: you can explain experiences, talk about your interests, describe situations, and express simple opinions. A person with a B1 level can manage in many situations while traveling, understand conversations about familiar topics, and write simple, coherent texts.

This level marks the step toward more independent language use. Mistakes may still occur, but they usually do not prevent communication.

The B1 level is part of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, which organizes language learning into six levels: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, and C2.

What Should You Do After the Test?

After taking the test, you can follow one of these paths:

  • If your score is low, we recommend reinforcing the B1 level to gain confidence in real-life situations and consolidate intermediate content.
  • If your score is intermediate, you can continue practicing grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, and expression to communicate with more autonomy.
  • If your score is high, you can take the B2 Spanish test to check whether you are ready for the next level.
