Spanish proficiency levels from A1 to C2

The A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2 levels provide a progressive description of language proficiency. Each level represents an increasing ability to understand, communicate and use Spanish in different situations.

A1 Beginner You understand and use very common expressions and basic structures.
A2 Elementary You can communicate in simple and routine everyday situations.
B1 Intermediate You can communicate with a degree of independence in many common situations.
B2 Upper - Intermediate You communicate more fluently and understand more complex content.
C1 Advanced You can use Spanish fluently, flexibly and accurately in complex contexts.
C2 Proficient You understand and use Spanish with a very high degree of precision and nuance.

If you're not sure which test to choose or how to interpret the results, here are answers to some of the most common questions students have before getting started.

What test should I take if I don't know my Spanish level?

If you don't have an idea of your current level, we recommend starting with the general Spanish test. It includes content from different levels and gives you an initial indication of your starting point.

What is the difference between the general test and the A1–C2 tests?

The general test is designed for students who do not yet have a clear idea of their level. The specific A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2 tests are designed to assess your knowledge of content at a particular level.

What do Spanish level tests assess?

The tests work on different aspects related to Spanish, including grammar, vocabulary, comprehension and practical use.The aim is to give you an indication of your current knowledge, not to provide a complete assessment of all language skills.

Does the test officially certify my Spanish level?

No. The result is only an indication of your level and does not constitute an official Spanish language certificate. If you need to officially certify a specific level, you will need to take a recognised exam such as the DELE.

What if my result falls between two levels?

It is completely normal for your knowledge not to fit neatly into a single level. You may be confident with some areas at one level while still needing to strengthen others. TThat is why the result should be used as a guide for your learning,rather than as a fixed classification.
